by: Joe Waters – webmaster A held ball is called when two players have control of the basketball at the same time, but neither is able to gain sole possession of it.

I don’t believe there is a certain time limit on this. Rather, the referee determines that neither player is able to gain possession of the basketball. In which case, a jump ball will be called.
