So what are youth basketball player movements and why are they so important?

I feel that in order to be successful at any aspect of basketball, you need to be able to control your body at all times. To do this you need to understand the basic position or stance you need to be in. This is the foundation or starting point of the youth basketball player movements.

Basketball Basic Position or Stance

Here are the key components of the basic position or stance you need to be aware of and work on:

  • Your feet should be staggered and about should-width apart.
  • Your body weight should be evenly distributed from front to back and side to side.
  • Your head should be centered from front to back and side to side.
  • Your arms and legs should be bent and ready to move.

By being in this basic position, your body is flexed, comfortable and ready to move. This puts you in a very athletic stance.

From this position you are able to do almost anything you need to do on the basketball court:

  • You can catch the basketball.
  • You can pass the ball.
  • You can shoot the ball.
  • You can make various pivot moves.
  • You can make an offensive move with or without the basketball.
  • You can jump to rebound.
  • You can slide your feet to play defense.

This basic position puts you in an athletic stance that is the foundation of good basketball.

By learning and practicing this basic position and understanding its importance – you are putting yourself in a good position to succeed at the game of basketball.
